Many times, the elimination of eating disordered behaviors and the achievement of physical health results in better body image. Other times, despite significant improvement in behaviors, the experience of one's body continues to cause significant distress. Recovery doesn't have to mean hating your body! There are specific tools and techniques that I can teach you to help alleviate that discomfort, and improve your relationship with your body. You can learn to accept....and even like....your body!
An eating disorder is a complex medical illness that can have devastating and lasting effects on a person’s physical and psychological well-being. An estimated 10 million females and 1 million males are currently suffering from an eating disorder, which is especially frightening when you consider that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
Recovery is possible!
I treat anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder,
and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). I bring
into my practice the experience of having worked at several
eating disorder facilities at various levels of care, including
intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and inpatient.
But what if your struggles don't fit a specific eating disorder?
No problem! I also help people work through disordered eating issues, body image dissatisfaction, compulsive over-exercise, and "orthorexia" which is an obsession with eating healthy. Whatever the issue, together we will find a resolution.
Progress, not perfection.
My philosophy is to shift away from unhealthy, perfectionistic tendencies and to embrace the ebb and flow that is real progress. Our first priority will be to help you interrupt any potentially life-threatening behaviors you're experiencing. Once some progress is made in decreasing symptoms, we can begin to unfold some of the factors that contributed to the rise and maintenance of the eating disorder. Through it all, I emphasize the importance of building more effective coping skills and helping you to develop contentment and balance.
