Trauma can take many forms. It can include major life events such as rape, sexual or physical abuse, neglect, witnessing a catastrophic event, or suffering years of verbal abuse. Alternately, trauma can be less intense but chronic, continually reinforcing beliefs such as “I’m not good enough”, “I’m worthless”, “I’m powerless”, or “I have no control”. When distressing or traumatic events occur, the memories are stored in the brain differently than memories of non-traumatic experiences. Because of this, the components of traumatic memories (images, sounds, smells, touch, taste, thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs) seem timeless and are often re-experienced by sufferers as if they are happening right now. Such is the case with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), where the individual experiences intrusive recollections of the traumatic event. This re-traumatization feels devastating and can significantly disrupt a person’s day to day functioning and feeling of well-being.
